Overview
A systematic review is a form of research that aims to identify, appraise, and synthesize all available evidence relevant to a specific research question. Unlike a traditional literature review, which can be subjective, a systematic review follows a strict, pre-specified protocol. This protocol outlines the research question, the comprehensive search strategy across multiple databases, the explicit criteria for including or excluding studies, and the methods for assessing the quality and risk of bias of each included study. By making the process transparent and reproducible, systematic reviews aim to minimize bias and provide a complete and impartial summary of the existing research.
A meta-analysis is a statistical technique often, but not always, used within a systematic review to combine the quantitative results from multiple studies. If the individual studies are similar enough in terms of their design, population, and outcomes (a state known as homogeneity), their data can be pooled. This process increases the overall sample size, which enhances the statistical power to detect an effect and provides a more precise estimate of that effect's magnitude.
